What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the percentage of adults who during the past 12 months have stopped smoking for one day or longer because they were trying to quit.
Why this is important:
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nicotine dependence is the most common form of chemical dependence in the United States. Although quitting smoking is often difficult and may require multiple attempts, there are many health benefits of successful cessation. People who stop smoking at an early age greatly reduce their risk for disease and premature death. Some benefits include lowering risk for lung and other types of cancer and reducing risk for coronary heart disease, stroke, and infertility. There are several effective treatment and medications that can increase the chances of successful cessation including: counseling, brief clinical interventions, behavioral cessation therapies, nicotine replacement productions, and other nonnicotine medications.
The Healthy People 2020 national health target is to increase the proportion of adult smokers aged 18 years and older who have attempted to stop smoking in the past 12 months to 80.0%
Technical Note:  The regional value is compared to the Tennessee state value.
