| Description |
The HIV/AIDS Intervention, Prevention, and Continuity of Care Demonstration Project for Incarcerated Individuals Within Correctional Settings and the Community, known as the Corrections Demonstration Project (CDP) was a joint project of the Health Resources and Services Association (HRSA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The program was implemented in jail, prison, and juvenile settings in seven states (CA, FL, GA, IL, MA, NY, and NJ) and targeted inmates with HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, tuberculosis, substance abuse, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The program included disease treatment in correctional facilities, discharge planning, and services following release. CDP used collaborations with corrections systems, the community, and public health systems to provide continuity of health care and supportive services to inmates while they are incarcerated and following their release. |
| Goal / Mission |
The goal of the CDP was to improve health care access for incarcerated individuals and at-risk minority populations disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. |
| Results / Accomplishments |
Between 1999 and 2004, CDP provided prevention education to more than 123,000 people, screening services to more than 41,000 individuals, and discharge planning and services to nearly 7,000 people living with HIV/AIDS. Between juvenile facilities, county jails, and prisons 41,415 Chlamydia tests, 35,721 Gonorrhea tests, and 28,516 HIV tests were administered. Following the completion of the CDP four of the service providers were selected by the CDC's Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention to receive funding, and all seven participating programs have taken steps to continue services. |
